What happens to the picture
The video is re-encoded, so some detail is traded for size. Balanced aims for a large saving with little visible change; Smaller file goes further. Where a smaller file needs it, AMGlide lowers the resolution or frame rate and tells you it did.
When it won't get smaller
Some videos are already efficiently compressed. AMGlide says so before encoding rather than making a file that ends up bigger, and stops a run that is heading well past the original's size.
Older formats
Files such as FLV, AVI or WMV that this browser can't read directly can be made compatible first, in the same tab. The compressor offers this when it finds a file it can't open.
Limits
Videos up to 1 GB. It needs a browser that can encode video — current Chrome and Edge can; if yours can't, this page says so before you choose a file.
